Thimerosal: clinical, epidemiologic and biochemical studies.

INTRODUCTION Thimerosal (or Thiomersal) is a trade name for an organomercurial compound (sodium ethyl-mercury (Hg) thiosalicylate) that is 49.55% Hg by weight, which rapidly decomposes in aqueous saline solutions into ethyl-Hg hydroxide and ethyl-Hg chloride. Developed in 1927, it has been and is still being used as a preservative in some cosmetics, topical pharmaceuticals, and biological drug ...

The use of biochemical assays in epidemiologic studies of reproduction.

Recent progress in the assay of urinary hormones has opened new opportunities for epidemiologists to study hormones and health outcomes. This is especially true for studies of female reproduction. The cyclic nature of female reproduction can be fully described only by continuous frequent measurements that, in order to be practical, require easily collected biological specimens. We describe our ...

Hemoglobin Yakina. I. Clinical and biochemical studies.

Three members of a family who have erythrocytosis and a new hemoglobin, designated hemoglobin Yakima, are described. The abnormal hemoglobin is characterized by the substitution of histidine for aspartic acid at residue 99 in the beta-chain. Of three possible structure-function relations which would account for the increased oxygen affinity of hemoglobin Yakima, only two seem likely. These are:...

Biochemical and clinical studies of Friedreich's ataxia.

A series of biochemical tests aimed at elucidating the fundamental cause has been applied to 20 patients with Friedreich's ataxia. Special emphasis was placed upon pyruvate metabolism. The results demonstrate no precisely identifiable defect in the metabolism of pyruvate but indicate an abnormality in glucose uptake and metabolism.

Clinical and biochemical studies in homocystinuria.

Homocystinuria was diagnosed in 15 (0.59%) cases on screening 2560 children for aminoacidopathies. The commonest presenting features were ectopia lentis (95%) and mental retardation (86%). Other features included, dental anomalies (40%), osteoporosis (40%), behavioral problems (33%) and arachnodactyly (13%). Diagnosis was confirmed by iodoplatinate staining of one dimensional paper chromatograp...
